With bright colors and colorful backgrounds directly from the new animated film Book of Life it can be hard to put down the new game Book of Life: Sugar Smash. The new game from SGN, Fox and ReelFX studios is a match three premise game, most easily relatable to Candy Crush does also capitalize on the social aspect of connecting your friends for game play. However, the graphics and game play make Book of Life: Sugar Smash something so much more.
President and COO of SGN, Josh Yguado, took some time to explain the game. Josh says he has “always been a fan” of Guillermo del Toro and seemed delighted to have his company be working on Book of Life: Sugar Smash. As we began speaking, director Jorge Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro had just departed shortly before. “We’ve worked with so much of the talent on the rest of the film, it was great to meet with them.”

SGN has been around for about five years. Josh Yguado worked with his partner, Chris DeWolfe one of the original founders of Myspace.com, to join forces after their departure from Fox Studios. “We all left together to start this company. It’s nice that it’s all coming together again now that we’re working on a Fox film,” Yguado smiles. “It feels good.” And it isn’t just the feeling, the game is colorful and fun. “We want to develop the games we want and put them across all platforms so fans of the game or IP can play anywhere at anytime.”
Book of Life: Sugar Smash has the look and the feel of the film due to a loving partnership between organizations. “Working with Fox and Reel FX they were able to send every piece of art work from the film and the sounds from the film.” Sounds such as characters saying “Santa Gordita” and “Santa Chihuahua” populate throughout game play as the players gathers bits of candy to knock down rows and gain points. All the characters voices are from the film, including Zoe Saldana and Cheech Marin. The cheerful Mexican music in the background easily brings a smile to the players face and bright colors are everywhere.
Still, it isn’t just children who are being targeted for Book of Life: Sugar Smash. “Our average age is actually north of 30,” Ygudo says. “It’s a pretty broad user base. Free penny slot machine games. We skew a little bit female, with a 60/40 base, but both genders seem to enjoy it.”

While the game is currently only available for the iOS platforms, game play for the Android and other devices is expected in the next two weeks as finalizations are being made.
The downside of the game? It’s addictive. I found myself spending nearly 15 minutes playing before I even realized. It’s easy to find oneself cheering along side the characters while racking up points.
